Review of August 2021 Live Implant Surgery Course

My name is Henry, and I attended Dr. Kim's live implant surgery course on August 5-9, 2021.
I have been practicing general dentistry for 4 years and I've placed about 100 implants so far. Immediately after taking the course, I regretted not taking the course earlier in my career because I can now see so many areas that I wish I can go back and fix in order to yield better results.
So if you don't want to spend the time to read the rest of the review, i'll make it short-- I plan to go again in the near future, and you should feel confident that you will learn a lot from Dr. Kim's course because you will really learn how to place the implants not only the right way but also in a simplified manner.
Because this was Dr. Kim's first course after the COVID restriction, I had many questions including:
- is it safe in Tijuana?
- will I be safe after seeing so many random patients for the next 4 days?
- will there be enough patients?
Thankfully, I am still COVID-free and and came back to the States safely. And yes, Tijuana is safe and the people are very nice.
I wanted to take advantage of getting more familiar with immediate implant placements & sinus lifts from this course, and there were plenty of patients who needed the procedures.
I attended the optional suture workshop, and you should also attend especially if you are proficient with suturing, because you can win a cool prize if you can suture the quickest.
Second day started with series of lectures in the morning at the hotel and going over to the clinic afterwards to see the patients for the rest of the day.
The attendee to faculty ratio is about 2 to 1, and I was paired with a doctor (Dr. Jinkyu Lee) who was so fun to work with :)
The staffs at the clinic consisted of mix of Mexican dentists and dental students, and all of them were very friendly and knowledgeable. I liked that we had our own assistants, not only becuase they made the whole procedure go smoother but also I got a chance to observe other attendees' cases while my partner was seeing his patient.
I especially liked the fact that the course focuses on placing implants the right way, which may involve taking multiple xrays during osteotomies to verify angulation, position & depth (which took good portion of the time because other attendees are also waiting for the xrays) which may lengthen the overall surgical time. However, I appreciated taking the xrays because that ensures that you are either on a right path, or allows you to change accordingly if it is off. And ultimately, this is good dentistry for the sake of the patients, and I plan to follow the same way for my future patients.
Only one comment that I can think of making in regards to the xray machine is that I wish the Mexico clinic invests in better computers because it took forever to process the xrays with their outdated computers.
To summarize, I got what I came for--to get more experience in immediates & sinus--and I received so much more. I am thankful to have met so many good people (faculty members and attendees alike) who are willing to share & help each other to become better dentists. I am happy that I am more confident in how to approach immediates & sinuses and once again, I look forward to learning alot more from Dr. Kim's future courses!
You are mising out if you are not taking advantage of Dr. Kim's course!
